Hurricane Sandy: Social Influence On My Life

Improved Essays
The aftermath of hurricane Sandy was horrific, however it was also followed by a huge amount of social responsible acts that influenced my life indefinitely. In October of 2012 my community was directly hit by hurricane Sandy which resulted in extreme flooding, fires and wind damage that left a tremendous amount of damage, including concrete sidewalks and streets in rubble; there were holes with half or entire truck’s or car’s buried inside of them. The flood was so bad that we were trapped inside until the water eventually drained into the sewer systems. When the storm and the water surpassed, people panicked; with no phone services, television or radio no one knew how long we would be without resources. Many people broke into flooded stores to get water, canned foods and any undamaged supplies he or she could find, but those of us that wouldn’t break the law used the fire hydrants as a water source however, we later found out that it was contaminated; many of us got sick. …show more content…
Volunteer’s stood up for hours at a time, cooking and handing out hot food, clothes, water and supplies to the people in my community. Eventually my family and I went to an evacuation shelter where the most influential social responsible acts occurred as there was a whole school filled with volunteers that worked around the clock to help those in need. My family and I were so inspired that we began volunteering as well; even my 10 year old autistic daughter helped out by sorting donated clothes and any other tasks she was capable of doing. My family and I are now planning to take courses that were offered to us by the city that trains us to help out on future potential

Today, my youngest brother, my nephew and I volunteered at an event coordinated by United for Puerto Rico, in Arlington, Virginia. As we arrived at the location, we were greeted by the sight of a large Puerto Rican flag, a large crowd of volunteers and the blaring sound of Salsa music. We handed our donated items, signed in and received instructions. My brother and my nephew helped with loading boxes onto trucks and I helped with packing and labeling boxes. The event was well-planned and organized.…

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

A veteran to me is a patriotic, unselfish, brave, and courageous person, who would sacrifice time from their families to serve and protect our nation. As Jeff Miller once said, “The willingness of America’s Veterans to sacrifice for our country has earned them our lasting gratitude.” Veterans from every country have served throughout many wars. They have put their blood, sweat, and effort into doing the right and beneficial thing for their nation. Being a veteran means not only to serve in the military, but it means to have the selflessness and courage to go off to war to ensure the freedom of the nation.…

For hurricane Irma, I had to evacuate Cape Canaveral and go to my father's house in Ocala. I am very thankful I did because a tornado swept pass on the street across from mine, and many of my neighbors lost their roofs completely. My house had roof damage in the room I use as my art studio. There were some leaks which messed up some artworks in progress. I am thankful though that it is all the damage and not anything more because I know a lot of people went through a lot worse.…

Directly after Hurricane Katrina, I visited my family in Louisiana for six months. In this short time I spent with my aunt, I witnessed more poverty and devastation than a newspaper headline could ever offer. I recall crawling through the streets of Layfette glazing silently at a child playing with her shoe, as she had no toys to play with. Walking inside a half vacated half vandalized mall reminded me of a TV western ghost town. My cousin saw I was uneasy from the disparity of the town, so she offered me to come to her day camp center to help out.…

We spent a whole day at my school doing simple tasks such as garden cleaning, moving old furniture, covering graffiti, repainting old walls and stairwells. In the end, volunteering had a huge impact not only on me but also the community around me. It enabled me to connect with my community and make my school a better place. I realized that helping out with the simplest and smallest tasks can make a drastic difference in society. If we were to lose physical space, people would surrender their desire to obtain public good.…

Last summer, I was a live-in volunteer for a nonprofit organization called Casa Juan Diego in Houston, TX. Casa is a Catholic Worker house that proves assistance to immigrants, refugees, and the poor. As a live-in volunteer, I had daily duties, but there was never a routine day. This experience has prepared me to be an educator program intern because I'm equipped to work with the unexpected and effectively problem-solve. Also, I worked for only 8 weeks and had to learn fast and adapt to the quick pace of Casa.…

When describing the events to a friend who asked what it looked like down in Houston, I said: “it doesn’t matter if you’re poor, rich, young or old, if you live in the area your home is destroyed.” Affecting more than 13 million people, I can attest that Hurricane Harvey is undeniably the worst Natural Disaster from this year. As a result of the Hurricane, 82 people were reported deceased. In addition to that, Governor Abbott predicted that the total amount of damage the Hurricane caused is 180 billion. It is therefore easy to agree that the impact of Hurricane Harvey is unmatchable when compared to other natural disasters.…
