In Chapter Four of Holler If You Hear Me by Gregory Michie, the author describes how some of the other veteran teachers in his education classes expressed their views on the disconnect between education theory and classroom reality. One such example of this disconnect is the theory of differentiated instruction. I have learned a lot about differentiated instruction in my Foundations Block classes this semester, since I had not previously heard of the concept. In theory, this practice is a great way to tailor instruction to each student’s individual needs, as well as encourage learning and exploration.…
Weekly e-Journal # 6 Vogt & Shearer Chapter 10 and Bean Chapter 8 integrate the foundational guidelines for a reading specialist/literacy coach to know possible ways to develop a literacy program. Bean's orientation for reading specialist leads to provide guidelines for planning literacy programs for schools or districts; these guidelines encompass the awareness of possible problems of difficulties that the we can find when we develop this kind of programs, the knowledge of what effective schools do in terms of developing programs, and a possible framework to develop literacy programs. Additionally to Bean's points, Vogt & Sheare provide a clear framework for selecting and evaluating instructional and technological materials for literacy programs.…
The main components of beginning and fledgling readers, proper assessment and instructions are discussed in the chapter. Beginning readers are children they're able to read your text with picture and other contextual support, recognize that these 15 site words, let's into initial sounds in words, and I understand word concepts. Furthermore, fledgling readers are discussed in the chapter. Fledgling readers are children who are able to recognize fifty words or more sight words, read unknown words by inset and time, read simple texts with less conceptual support, read with more fluency and use comprehension strategies. Beginning readers and fledgling readers benefit from assessments.…
How the teacher delivers the lessons there are certain core standards that they have to follow. These are known as the six FEAPs that are founded upon high expectations, knowledge of the subject matter, and the standards of the profession. The one that I plan on talking about is instructional delivery and facilitation. There are subtitles for this FEAP, where each one consistently utilizes a deep and comprehensive knowledge of the subject. One of them is deliver engaging and challenging lessons.…
I will remind students before they go back to their seat that they will need to use finger and touch each word, read 3 times and then read with a partner. When you are listening to your partner it is important that you do not interrupt them when they are reading. When they have finished reading they can color their books. 3. As the students are reading and coloring I will walk around and work one on one with a few low students who have difficulties with…
Discuss the relationship between ongoing assessment and differentiated instruction. • Student knowledge and understanding must be continually monitored through ongoing assessment in order for a teacher to differentiate their lessons properly. Ongoing (or formative) assessment occurs during the learning process to make sure students are retaining the information properly. If these ongoing assessments show that student understanding and performance is not up to par, then differentiation is needed. Ongoing assessments can also indicate to the teacher if the differentiation they are currently applying is effective or not, so that they can make further changes in their instruction.…
The 6 components of the Models of Differentiated Instruction are, content, process, products, affect, learning environment, and interest. 1. Content: This is the material and information that is taught and expected for the children to learn in the classroom. Content focuses more about the information that we are wanting the child to learn and know about.…

Providing for differentiation in lessons before students even enter the threshold of the classroom is a way to ensure all students can be successful in the classroom. In the artifact I have provided of a backward design unit plan are methods to provide differentiation and realize the quality indicators of 2.2 and 2.4 in the MoSPE standards. Realizing students have different readiness levels and recognizing strengths and weaknesses in students will lead to their success. Knowing students, their backgrounds, their likes and dislikes will help build a professional relationship with them that will be beneficial to both the teacher and the…
Each developmental area should be met in ways that help the students grow internally and externally. We as educators must create fun and innovative ways for students to express their physical, psychological, and cognitive development. For example, providing the students with opportunities that explore who they are, understanding what learning style(s) they possess by creating different activities, expand on cognitive abilities with different assessment and projects, and use more teaching strategies that move away from the constant “lecture-style.” Aside from knowing the developmental areas of the student, another aspect is the structure and characteristics of the middle school. Middle school grades range from 6 th to 8 th and educators are categorized by interdisciplinary teams (an English, Math, Science, Social Studies teacher).…
Each of these differences can be met by widening your lessons and discussing these differences rather than ignoring them. Students’ are top priority as a teacher, so recognizing their needs and assisting them in any way possible is necessary. The student will demonstrate knowledge of instructional frameworks for reading and writing-based instruction. MoSPE…
The term data-driven instruction (DDI), also called data supported instruction, is a systematic approach that is used to improve student learning based on available data (Lewis, Madison-Harris, Muoneke, & Times, 2010). It is a cyclic and precise process that continually improves learner’s success. The cycle has three repetitive stages, namely, assessment, analysis, and action. The latter stages provide a school-wide support framework for improving students learning throughout the year by identifying gaps in their learning (Hamilton, Halverson, Jackson, Mandinach, Supovitz, Wayman, & Steele, 2009). Data or evidence is the most crucial component of this instruction approach.…
Becher (2011) finds use the differentiated instruction can improve the quality of what the learners can remember and enhance. “As English teachers continue to encounter non-English speaking students in their classrooms, their skills in differentiating instruction will continue to expand. Tapping into the vast resources available online makes both sharing and discovering the strategies of other teachers easier than ever” (Becher, 2011, P71). Personally, differentiated instruction is the embodiment of the students communicate with their teachers.…
There may be academically gifted students or students with learning disabilities. Since there can be a huge spectrum, it is important to understand how changing a lesson for each type of learning style can impact a student and their ability to retain new information. This type of alteration is known as Differentiated Instruction. Case studies, research, and classroom accounts…
