The Feminist Movement is Necessary: Men are Paid more Than Women

As defined by Merriam Webster dictionary, feminism is “the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes.” It is not the belief that women are superior to men, but the need for women to be given the equal treatment they deserve.There are many physical differences between men and women but that is not an excuse for unfair treatment. Women work just as hard as men but earn less. Women are expected to be poised and ladylike. And millions of women are afraid to be out alone because of the threat of being sexually assaulted. But men don’t have to worry about walking to their car alone or making sure they fit society’s standards for what is attractive. But why? Many argue that women “choose” to earn less than men, by working lower paying jobs. But the higher paying jobs tend to be male dominated, making it a pretty unfriendly environment for females. Word spreads of the sexism and discrimination in these jobs, and this deters women from entering those fields. So in a sense, women do “choose to be paid less” but they aren’t applying for jobs hoping to get paid less than their male coworkers. No one wants to be paid less, but no one wants to be discriminated against simply for being of the other gender. Women are also held to gender stereotypes from the day they are born. If you think about it, as soon as a pregnant couple finds out that they’ll be having a girl, they buy plenty of pink toys and blankets and dresses. “Traditionally, the female stereotypic role is to marry and have children” (3). But what happens when a woman doesn’t want to get married or have children? She’s typically told that she’ll change her mind eventually. Girls are expected to play with dolls and always be polite. But what happens when a boy isn’t polite? They are usually met with the excuse “boys will be boys.” Many also believe that men are smarter than women; men dominate the medical field in America, and women only make up 20% of scientists.
