Would it not be great if you could automatically make 23 percent more than everybody else? It would be fantastic, would it not? Too bad that is not true, just like the gender wage gap. There has been a huge misconception about the gender wage gap. Saying women only make 77 cents per dollar that a man makes is an unfair statement that is a hindrance to society. This misconception could lead to unfair and even unconstitutional laws against men in the workplace. If you are a women that works over 40 hours a week, go ask a male at your place of work that have been working there the same amount of time as you and has the same qualifications as you how much he makes. Do you really think that he is going to make 23 percent more …show more content…
Let me explain. While it is true that men make more overall and if you compare all of the money that men make to all that women make, women would make about 77 cents per dollar that men make. This however is not a fair comparison. The way that 77 cent per dollar was found was by lumping everyone together, even if they work a different amount of hours. As the noted researcher Kay Hymowitz, stated “Women, on average work less hours than men” (Hymowitz). Now If you start grouping people buy the amount of hours they work then something extraordinary happens. “When comparisons are made between men and women who work 40 hours per week, women make 87% of men 's earnings”, according to Diana Furchtgott-Roth’s research (Furchtgott-Roth). Diana Furchtgott-Roth’s Research also found that “For men and women who work 30 to 34 hours a week, women make more, 109% of men 's earnings”. When you compare on a hourly level, there is a Gender Wage Gap that harms both Men and Women. We can take an even further look we can compare at a job to job basis for a pay difference and when we do the gap almost diminishes. While it almost goes away, …show more content…
As I will explain, it is not fair to men, or places of work. It 's not even fair to women. The conception is not fair from its very basis because it is false, but there is more to it than that. It could be considered ok if it were a false conception that didn 't hurt anyone, like that carrots improve your vision or if you swim right after eating, you will get a cramp and drown, but this false idea could lead to very unfair laws. Laws could be introduced that would make men and women get paid the same even if the man or the women have much more experience than the man. Laws that would make a women automatically get paid more than a man to try and compensate for the massive difference that they say there is or laws that would make lawsuits more likely for companies that are accused of some gender gap. All this added to together would make it hard for a women to find a job. Nobody would want to hire somebody with so much risk associated with them. California tried to make one of these laws with their “Fair Pay Act“ and it hurt women. Companies felt that they were at a higher risk of getting suited and losing the battle and women 's employment went down. These laws could hurt the place of work even more because of the fact that they may have to pay a person that just joined the same as an experienced worker just so that they won 't get sued for a ‘Gender Wage Gap”. It may force them to hire women even if they
