The connection between media, advertising, and self image has always been around. Be it the idea of being as skinny as the model on TV, or just drinking name brand Coke to be “cool”. Being like the model usually causes more problems than a simple Coke, but it all happens. The model on TV usually affects people in the way that the men or women may want to be tanned, skinny, strong, or all around good looking. The effects of Coke may only have a person have a different label on their drink to afford it. Media affects all kinds of people in negative ways that may be minor or severe; the affects are both painful and not always necessary.

The same principal applies to an ugly person wearing $200 shoes that a knockoff could sell for $40. Some people only buy the things in hope to eventually be able to use it when it is appropriate. A woman may buy an expensive dress because it looked nice but is six sizes too small and she will resort to different drastic diets and possibly an eating disorder.
Eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia are dangerous and can easily lead to death if not caught and controlled. One could become anorexic or bulimic by reasoning of models, ill-fitting clothes, peers, or even everyday surroundings. Other than the obvious lack of nutrition from eating less than what is healthy, there are usually some psychological problems involved along with other physical damage. The act of purging one’s stomach of food by way of vomiting eventually starts to damage the esophagus from the almost constant stomach acid layering the tissue within it. Binge eating also helps damage the stomach by making its membrane become inflamed. If someone who has been binge eating and suddenly eat a large meal, it is possible on rare occasions for the stomach to rupture due to the constriction of it. Pneumonia is also a possible consequence of purging by the constant vomiting and some of the liquid going down into the lungs. Purging also makes for low potassium levels and low acid levels making the kidneys produce kidney stones or even kidney failure. This also makes the alkali
