Shang Dynasty The Shang dynasty is the first recorded Chinese dynasty. There is documentary and archaeological evidence that the other dynasties do not have (Van Doren 1). The Shang dynasty ruled between 1766 BC and 1122 BC (“World History Timeline: The Shang Dynasty of Ancient China" 1). According to Chinese history, the Shang dynasty was the second dynasty of Ancient China. It was founded by a rebel kind named Tang (“World History Timeline: The Shang Dynasty of Ancient China” 1). It is said that Tang overthrew the last king of the Xia dynasty, Jie. The Xia dynasty was the first ancient dynasty of China (“World History Timeline: The Shang Dynasty of Ancient China" 1). Jie ruled the Xia dynasty with an iron fist. He lived in luxury and “ruled oppressively” ("The Shang Dynasty" 1). King Tang began attacking the Xia people which ultimately led to a rebellion. In the end, Tang conquered the Shang in 1600 BC. Jie’s people turned on him and sided with the Shang ("The Shang Dynasty" 1). …show more content…
He tried to do right by the people in the Shang dynasty. He lowered taxes and made the outlying tribes vassals ("The Shang Dynasty" 1). Under Tang’s rule, the Shang dynasty’s territory expanded. It included territory to the south and reached the sea to the east ("The Shang Dynasty" 1). Tang ruled the Shang dynasty for 30 years. Tang’s son, Wai Bing, took over his father’s reign (“Shang Dynasty” 2). The last Shang dynasty king was named Shang Zhou. The Shang’s fall mirrors the fall of the Xia. In 1027 BCE, a rebel tribe known as the Zhou overthrew the Shang Dynasty. The Zhou claimed that the Shang lost “the Mandate of Heaven” (Sayre 105). Like the Xia dynasty, Tang’s own people rebelled against him ("The Shang Dynasty” 2). Zhou Wu allowed Shang Zhou’s song to continue to rule the Shang people as vassals ("The Shang Dynasty”
