Wisconsin Widget started in Wisconsin in 1928 and employees 22,500 people worldwide. Wisconsin Widget has manufacturing facilities in the US, China, and Mexico with design engineering services and engineering support located in both the US, India and China. Payroll and after hours IT support is outsourced to an outside vendor located in India. We provide internships in engineering, sourcing, marketing, and manufacturing/fabrication to both the local universities and technical colleges, offering opportunities for full-time employment after graduation. We also offer a leadership development program for our employees, requiring rotations in HR, Operations, Sourcing and or Quality, Production Planning, and Manufacturing/Fabrication. These events are designed to expose employees to diversity in a fun and educational environment. The first event is the annual dragon boat race. This is a yearly event that not only is a team building and diversity event it is also a charity event benefiting the Ronald McDonald House. Last year was our fourth annual Milwaukee event, with fifty teams competing. More than 300 people participated, representing every business unit and many positions in the company, from interns and early career professionals to VP’s and senior engineers. Each year Wisconsin Widget offers learning opportunities to raise awareness and educate employees on diversity. It is typically a one or two day event where employees sit through seminars and participate in mock serrano’s to apply what they have learned. They are then asked to share their experience with their co-workers and apply what they have learned. This year’s event is hosted by White Men as Full Diversity Partners. The goal of this event it to address the role we all play in how we impact the employee experience and our engagement with each other.
There are three diversity best practices that Wisconsin Widget focuses on. The first is incorporating diversity beyond HR. Organizations that do not take a companywide approach to diversity will have a difficult time retaining the improvements they make (Ilgaz Z. 2015).
