In the modern world, impoverished and underdeveloped countries exist in large numbers, which is a problem that is underrated and is not being solved efficiently. Poor countries such as Kenya, Congo, and Bangladesh need a lot of help but they do not have the resources to pay many people to work and help develop the country. Luckily organisations like United Nations offer help but most of the time it is not enough to make a big difference. This is where voluntourism comes in. The concept of voluntourism is to send people, who pay for their own stay and needs, into impoverished countries to help the them in labour and in other needs, such as taking care of children in daycares and teaching them new languages. After reading “Voluntourism gone wrong”, I started questioning myself about voluntourism and if it only comes with positive sides or it also has negative sides. The temporary volunteers stay for a couple of months up to a year which leads the younger people in the country getting really attached to the volunteers. Also, it could end up hurting them when the volunteers leave and never come back, and this could occur many times if a child gets attached to more than one volunteer. We all know that the volunteers mean well but they do not know the repercussions that they could have on the young ones. The text that I had the chance to read “Voluntourism Gone Wrong: The ugly side of voluntourism” reported that volunteers create false role models for the children that they will never achieve. Briefly, the volunteers could mean well but could end up with consequences that they were not aware
