Peace Corps Research Paper

Of the thousands of applicants each year, not everyone gets accepted. Going through a strict application process including background checks and citizenship verification,it is not as easy as some might think. The first two requirements for the process are simple. These include being a citizen of the United States, and at least eighteen years of age. Secondly, the Peace Corps must be completely separate from all other government intelligences. This means, anyone who has worked with or in the CIA is not allowed to apply. To add to that, any current military intelligence are usually not allowed to apply if currently assigned a position otherwise. Once being accepted into the program an assignment is made. Over 141 countries have been host countries for the Peace Corps. (“Fast Facts.”) However, majority of the assignments are directed to Africa. Peace Corps volunteers work with local governments, schools, communities, small businesses and entrepreneurs to develop sustainable solutions to challenges in education, health, economic development, agriculture, environment and youth development. These volunteers are teaching the future of the world. From elementary education to postsecondary schooling, this and everything in between is taught by the educated volunteers themselves. Many underdeveloped countries have limited numbers of qualified teachers. The Peace Corps teaches those who aspire to instruct, and then therefore can continue on down the line to elementary level teaching. Libraries and technology resource centers are also developed by volunteers to broaden the capability of young children all the way up to adults.
