Why Is Gun Control Important

Our national efforts to encourage registration of all firearms may be working against our cause. Thousands upon thousands of individuals are very distrustful of our movement and the government. Recent serious crimes have made the public even more fearful, and many look to their firearms to defend themselves and their families. The worse it gets, the less people will want to give up their guns. Many people swear that if a national gun registry becomes a reality, their guns will go underground. Some have bumper stickers that say “come get it” and have a picture of an AR15. Most politicians candidly admit that registration would not have prevented any of the tragic mass slayings that have occurred in recent times. There are millions of guns in America. Trying to take them away from the general public could actually result in another civil war, with more deaths than we could imagine. No one wants that! …show more content…
We know that a great deal of gun violence is perpetrated by street gangs. Why not outlaw firearms in the hands of persons proven to be members of criminal organizations- like criminal street gangs. Focusing on specific groups that are notorious for their criminal activity, such as street gangs and people on terrorist watch lists might avoid much of the basic distrust that exists between our organization and the NRA, allow meaningful laws to pass, and improve public safety. If we could agree on the definition of a “criminal organization,” we could simply outlaw possession of firearms and ammunition by members of that type of organization.
