When an American hears the words “gun control,” that person personally has strong emotions and opinions or knows someone that does. Guns are used for hunting, sport, protection and self-defense to name a few positive uses for guns. Unfortunately, guns are used for threatening, robbing, and killing making the person with the gun in control of the situation. Some people blame the gun laws, which allow gun ownership. Others blame the person for choosing to use the gun in a harmful way. Based on the 2nd Amendment, Americans have the right to own guns for protection and recreation.
The Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was adopted on December 15, 1791 (“Assault Weapons”). The interpretation of the the 2nd Amendment -”the right to bear arms” -is constantly being scrutinized. In many states the NRA makes it nearly impossible to “discuss laws targeting illegal guns” (Schwartz). Their spokesperson, Wayne LaPierre, held a press conference where he “argued that more guns, not fewer, were necessary to prevent gun violence” (“Gun Control Laws”). Also, according to the article, “Assault Weapons,” the “gun control advocates” have exaggerated the threat of assault weapons, “since assault weapons are not substantial to the threat they pose” (“Assault Weapons”). It is how the gun is used that makes it a threat or not. There are many gun enthusiasts that organize around specific institutions and events such as “gun stores, gun shows, shooting ranges, and shooting activities” like skeet shooting, trap shooting, duck hunting to name a few (Wolf, Rosen).
