1. Introduction
Leadership is an area of development that will perhaps never be mastered. I don’t believe that there can ere can ever be one best way to ensure effective leadership. Every organisation is unique. They all have their own idiosyncrasies and variants that make them similar but different. They all have their own contexts. Combined with these differences is the notion that organisations are always changing. So, if an organisation is always changing, then the leadership is required to change along with it. We can be consistent in some of the ways we lead and the processes we take, but leadership is not a static thing; it is ever changing.
Good leadership is something that develops through experience, knowledge, commitment, patience and the ability to know oneself and others & to be able to work well with others. Daniel Goleman says that the old model of leadership, much like the Great Man theory, where the skills and expertise of the leader were the most important characteristics are now now longer relevant. The new characteristics are those that surround the person. Their personal qualities of initiative and empathy, adaptability and persuasiveness. In the old model of leadership, leaders were born to the job, not made. It is increasingly accepted, however, that in order to be a good leader, one must have the experience, knowledge, commitment, patience, and most importantly the skill to negotiate and work with others to achieve goals.
