Definition Essay On What Makes An Effective Leader

When you look at what the importance of leadership is you first must answer the question of what is a leader. A leader by definition is “a guiding or directing head, as of an army, movement, or political group.” (Merriam Webster Dictionary) this defines a leader but a leader is so much more. A leader is a person who can inspire others to do things they never thought they could. A leader is able to engage with others to provide purpose, motivation, and direction. My personal belief is that this is what makes a leader effective at leading other people. This definition and ability to provide purpose motivation and direction however can all fall under the blanket statement of leadership. Integrity is to do what’s right at all times regardless of if anyone is watching or not. Integrity is what will make a leader trustworthy and respectable. This is because the people there in charge of will recognize that he or she will always do what is right regardless of the situation. This belief builds trust and allows the leader to lead more effectively. The final trait I believe that a leader should possess is personal courage. The United states army defines this as “Face fear, danger or adversity (physical or moral)” (Merriam Webster Dictionary) To have personal courage is to be able to stand up and act upon what you believe to be correct. This trait in a leader to me translates into standing by and defending your people. As it is a leader’s responsibility to take care of their subordinates if the leader does not possess personal courage then the men and women under there command may get harmed or disrespected with no deprecations. However, if a leader possesses personal courage they will stand up and fight for the people there in charge of and make sure they do all they can for those people. All these traits are important and each one is needed to be a leader.

And, as an aspiring broker, taking risks are an exception, and that, the keys to becoming an effective leader are knowledge, experience, practice, and learning from one’s mistakes. A good leader should have integrity because people need to be able to trust that they will do what is best for the people they are leading. This is why hypocrisy is one of my biggest pet peeves; I value leadership and standing firm in your beliefs. I believe leadership is not how most define it. I believe leadership is less about the number of people that agree and more about how one supports a cause, why one cares, and the actions one takes. I know leadership. And I’ve seen what has worked and what hasn’t. Even though people sometimes construe leadership as who has the most followers, the underlying principle is quite different -- in a profound way.…
