1. Leadership is something that is learned through life’s experiences, both good and bad. Experiences going back to your childhood began to shape the way you lead today. When I was young, as far back as I can remember my father lead by example. Lessons he portrayed to me through action and or words included: accountability, setting high standards, treating everyone and everything with respect, jumping in and getting your hands dirty, any work was not beneath him as long as it was honest work, being tough, but fair, being intrusive, but caring, always to work hard to play hard later. He had a rough childhood and grew up without a father figure, which just created drive for him to shape and mold my sister and me into what he had learned through hard knocks.

2. In stark contrast, a group of Chiefs I had early in my Coast Guard aviation career displayed to me what not to do as a leader. They all advanced to E7 a year into my first tour and instantly things

A personal respect for every member is the platform for which we all start. From the moment I meet a new member out of “A” school, an incoming Chief, or a new Division Officer, the slate is clean. Out the gate, one of my first statements and promises is that Chiefs and I are there for them and their successes and failures. Their 100% effort is expected at all times and that we are there to reciprocate that effort in times of good and bad. I believe by displaying to them that we are all in from Day one, sets the tone that we are a family, and are there for each other.

5. A respect for every brother and sister at the unit is conveyed from the start as well. Respect includes the expectation to give 100% to each and every coworker. This list is common sense for most, but is paramount for success and needs to be stated. To include: being punctual, honest, committed, understanding, respectful, accountable, etc. If the Coast Guard values of Honor, Respect, and Devotion to Duty are followed, success is easily
