After we talked things through I felt better about myself and I understood his position. I was his go-to buddy and he was mine for when we needed someone to talk to. Everyone should have that type of person in their life. Everyone needs somebody who they can trust and go to for anything but especially a crony to just talk to. That’s what friends are for. It’s essential to try to surround yourself with positive people that will be there when life gets a little rough. A true friend accepts who you are but also helps you to stay on the right path. Eventually, he came out to his friends. Quite a few showed support, but even more people took it the wrong way. A number of of his classmates bullied him and gossiped about him. Even his teammates in the Metro Aquatic Club of Miami commenced to exclude him from their group of friends. They would call him names and make up ridiculous rumors that would make him very upset. He was the target child. It was unchallenging and facile to mess with the “gay kid”. I feel like as a teen who is witnessing that type of bullying I should step in and try to stop it but not many people defended him. The hardest part was seeing how many just looked away or walked away from the bullying scene. I got to see the importance of standing up to a bully and trying to stop the chain.
