Companionship is a part of life all humans seek out and crave; whether it be romantic or platonic, the core of all healthy relationships are positive friendships. The question comes to mind, however, what makes up the contents of a good friend? An eccentric sense of humor, great advice, and honesty are all things that come to mind when you think about the makings of a quality friend. Friends are important to have because they provide a metaphysical backbone when things get tough in life and give their friends the love and support they need. We rely on them when loneliness is a concept we cannot bear, yet on a conscious level, we rarely spend much time actually thinking on how we classify our friends. Pondering on that subject, however, led me to the realization that in fact there are three different types of friends.

Anyone who has spent time with their companions has noticed that each one has a special personality with respect to their honesty, loyalty, and care. My moment of eureka led to me categorizing them according to how well I know them and how well they know me. We encounter each type of friend every day, whether in school, home, or at the gym.

First, there is the “pest friend” which is basically an acquaintance. Next, there are the social partners. Lastly, we have “best friends” which we identify as our true friends.
