Personal Statement: A Career As A Fashion Designer

Superior Essays
“Does a fashion designer actually have to know a lot about, well, fashion?”. This is the million dollar question whose answer broke my unartistic and unimaginative 7 year old heart. When i was 7 years old, i was asked what i wanted to be when i grow up. Of course, i said fashion designer. What little girl doesn’t want to spend the rest of her life in glamour and mania? Little did i know, in order to perceive a career, you must have a passion and skill in that area. My knowledge of my culture has kept me interested in other cultures so i can learn about their values and beliefs. I enjoy meeting people from other cultures, it fascinates me. Being culturally diverse, i am used to adapting. I can go from taking part of my culture and following my nationalities morals and molding it to fit the society and community i am currently living in. I am also fluent in both arabic-egyptian and english. I believe being part of two different cultures has taught me to have a broad world view, which leads me to think “outside of the box.”

When i was 13 years old, i had knee surgery on both of my knees due to a growth condition i had that was harming my body structure. I had 4 screws put in each knee. 13 months later i had the same surgery, except this time the screws were being taken out. This unfortunate event caused to to stay away from any sport or athletic activity. Coming into high school, i feared not being given the same opportunities of making new friends and forming a bond with a team in a sport. This fear of mine went away very quickly. I joined service club, best buddies, psychology club, and student senate. These clubs allowed me to form friendships with peers i would not have met otherwise, and take part of the community within my school. Of all clubs i took part in, Service club was important to me. In service club, i volunteered in a soup kitchen every other Wednesday from 4-7 pm. The purpose of volunteering was to give back to people who may have been going through tough times as well as give back to the community and make a positive difference. Volunteering allowed me to get involved with new things and develop technical, social, and academic skills that i couldn 't learn in a classroom environment. I believe that building relationships with people is crucial. Volunteering allowed me to build connections with new people as well as expand my knowledge. I also took the time during my spring break of 2015 to
