Explain the differences between the following terms: Performance standard, quality standard, and luxury standard. A performance standard is most likely expressed in terms of times and counts. An example of performance standard is the number of groceries a bagger is expected to bag during a shift. Quality standards are expressed in terms of levels. An example of a quality standard is having a certain thread count as well as down-filled pillows in a luxury hotel, while a lower quality hotel would have lower thread count sheets and foam pillows. Luxury standards are also expressed in terms of levels. An example of luxury levels is the comparison of Rolls Royce and Chevrolet. A Rolls Royce dealership would typically pick up autos for service at the owner’s home and flatbed them to the dealership for repair and include detailing on the interior and exterior without charger extra. This level of luxury is not to be expected at a Chevy or Ford dealership.

Before delving further into leadership and management theories and styles it is good to understand the difference between a manager and a leader. Bennis and Nanus (1985, p221) state that ‘managers are people who do things right and leaders are people that do the right thing.’ Yukl (2002, p7) goes on to suggest that leadership is the process of influencing others to understand and agree about what needs to be done and how it can be done effectively, and the process of facilitating individual and collective efforts to accomplish the shared objectives. However, Stodgill (1974:7) powerfully stated that ‘there are as many definitions of leadership as there are persons who have tried to define it.’ Although there are varying definitions to leadership…

A study conducted by Burton, Peachey, and Wells (2017) evaluates the role of servant leadership in creating and maintaining a more ethical climate within collegiate sports. With scandals such as Jerry Sandusky's sexual misconduct at Penn State, academic scandals in various schools, sexual misconduct at Baylor, Maimi and others, it leads one to realize the collegiate sports culture needs a drastic overhaul. Burton et al. (2017) propose that organizational climates that lead to unethical behavior among leaders, administrators, and coaches seem to be more the norm than the exception in Sports organizations, and therefore needs an immediate cultural reform in the ranks of leadership.…

Combat Leadership Women currently make up more than 14% of the 1.4 million active military personnel but were not allowed to serve in over 230,000 combat positions; despite that they have increasingly served at the front lines (Goudreau, 2013). In 2013, the U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta decided to allow women to serve in military combat roles, reversing a 1994 policy that excluded women from serving in combat units. This ensures that the best person is in a leadership position regardless of their sex. For instance, if the best sniper is a woman, it should be her in that role. On the contrary, some people believe that women are not physically built like men, attempts to integrate them may lead to lowered standards overall.…

In his book Transforming Leadership: From Vision to Results, author John D. Adams identifies the importance of direct leadership “Passive followership, although perhaps a traditional perspective, is neither functional nor preordained for today’s probabilistic world” (Adams, 1986, p. 12). Meaning, direct leaders must be proactive and constantly discuss their situation, wants, and needs for mission accomplishment, while organizational leadership’s obligation is to be receptive and probing of their direct leadership. Field Manual 6-22, Army Leadership, defines the term leadership as “providing purpose, direction, and motivation to accomplish the mission and improve the organization.” (Headquarters, Department of the Army, 2006, p. 1-2). Those last three words are arguably the most important.…

It is important to have an understanding of the different leadership styles and leadership theories, in order to develop the leadership platform. It is also important to note that there “are almost as many different definitions of leadership as there are people who have tried to define it” (Northouse, 2013, p. 2). As we progress in knowledge, technology, and growth as a society, so do the leadership styles and theories. As stated by Northhouse (2013), “Leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal” (p.5)…
