Twenty years and 58,286 deaths later, the Vietnam War went down as one of the most significant in United States history. (Source A) The war is more historically remembered as the Indochina War to Americans due to its location and its unforeseeable loss to North Vietnam. Although the United States was just an ally of South Vietnam with hopes to stop the spread of communism, they ended up being the largest foreign military presence which lead to Vietnam schooling labeling it as the American War. One worry was cost but the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund took on the task of raising nine million dollars and they did exactly that which meant federal funds were not needed. (Source A) Along with a cost crisis came a civil crisis as the memorial went through much havoc as disagreements accumulated on whether or not the design chosen was good or not but rather than ignoring the issue, a fifty foot flag pole was added as well as three sculptures to satisfy those who were in opposition. (Source B) One of the sculptures was added to accommodate to the group of people who thought that those who died were the only ones honored and portrayed men holding a flag which helped regain acceptance. Another civil issue regarded the memorial's design as people thought that it was dark feeling and depicting it as sinking into the ground made it feel like the United States has something to hide. (Source B) The memorial is located on the National Mall and is open to public 24 hours a day with rangers on duty from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. At times it can get emotional because a group known as Honor Flight Network sometimes takes those who fought in the Vietnam War but are still living to the memorial. (Source C) Tourists can admire the wall which took eight months to complete and stretched almost 494 feet.
