In this section, the findings of East Harlem and the Upper East Side will be discussed to create an understanding of why one neighborhood is extremely different or similar to the other. The Upper East Side is home to many affluent residents. (6) Focusing specifically on tobacco usage, advertisements, and corporations influence, this area is not as easily influence because of their level of income, education, and resources. Tobacco usage is not a norm in this neighborhood because the residents are solely concerned with living a healthy and wealthy life to match up with their local peers. The local drug stores, businesses, residents and advocates coalesce around the idea that tobacco usage is harmful. They have concluded with this mindset because …show more content…
The prosperity of this neighborhood is starting to affect its residents. Through an informal interview, an Upper East Side resident stated that tobacco usage is not present during the peak hours of activity because residents, specifically parents do not want their children to be influenced negatively by unhealthful products such as tobacco. The person also confided that tobacco usage is mostly done at night within bars, lounges, and nightclubs. The use of filtered cigars is most common because resident believe they must smoke products that meet to their high quality of living. In reference to the theory of the Health Belief Model(8), their perceived severity is lax because they continue with their normal, healthy lives during the rest of the week and only consume tobacco products on occasions. They do not comprehend the consequences and risk of asthma from smoking. Nevertheless, the Upper East Side is not at risk for asthma more than East Harlem because of their resources, lifestyle choices, and neighborhood advocacy that drive tobacco corporations …show more content…
This because of the tobacco corporations influence on this specific neighborhood. Tobacco corporations contribute to the prevalence of asthma in East Harlem more than the Upper East Side because of their control over the product prices.(3) Companies purposely reduce the prices of tobacco products in impoverished communities to generate higher revenue from sales. They also release a higher amount of advertisements directed towards the community residents with appealing slogans. For example, as awareness of the dangers of smoking increase, tobacco advertisements propose a safer alternative, electronic cigarettes. The prices and advertisements are also similar for smokeless tobacco, hookah, and flavored cigarettes in East Harlem. Residents in East Harlem engage in a mindset that has been a norm for many years in this neighborhood. Smoking is a norm among all ages in East Harlem, so many do not belief there is a severe consequence of smoking, because they have not seen or been made aware of the consequences. Using the Health Belief Model, is it easy to notice residents do not perceive themselves at high risk for asthma nor do they perceive the severity of it.
