In the past five years, our organization has more than doubled in size and in its market share. As it has acquired additional hospital systems decision making for the organization, and at the departmental level, has become increasingly complex. The organization has invested in training and education to foster a culture of trust, respect, and accountability among its leaders. Its approach is a bottom up approach, directing its focus on arming managers and leaders with the tools necessary to become better communicators, informed decision makers, and empowering decision making at various levels in turn building a stronger system. While the organization has worked diligently to foster collaboration and teamwork, it has done very little to address the need to fine tune decision making processes and skills necessary for work teams. Robbins and Judge (2009) describe three types of techniques used in group decision making and they are interacting, brainstorming, nominal group technique, and the electronic meeting technique. In our organization we leverage each technique based on the types of decisions made but we predominantly use brainstorming as the preferred technique. Group decision making also works best when there are clearly defined objectives and deadlines, as delays in making decisions can occur (Korte, 2003). In an organization that has grown exponentially, such as ours, defining goals and time lines becomes essential if teams are to become effective and efficient work teams making solid decisions (Robbins and Judge, 2009).
