Groupthink is a phenomenon that occurs when the desire for harmony and compliance within a group leads people to operate in a way that can reach a faulty decision. (Janis,1972)
Historically, there are many examples of groupthink decisions made by corporations, governments, or other types of organization or group.
In this paper, we will examine an important aspect of Modern Greek history that changed not only its borders, but also the population characteristics of certain areas.
Asia Minor was a territory in the east side of the former Ottoman Empire (modern Turkey).After the outcome of the First World War that area was given to Greece for five years while after this period a referendum would decide the political future of the area. Greek politicians …show more content…
Politicians had no idea of what was happening on the front line, also if they had taken under consideration the majority’s view, instead of trying to satisfy personal interests, would have changed the sequence of facts. Another factor which plays a key role is the time needed in order to estimate a situation, foresee facts and create a plan-b in case things went bad.
The history cannot be changed, but it can exemplify us and operate as a compass in order to avoid recurrences of such situations.
Using the above example we come to the conclusion that different voices must be heard in a groupthink, no matter if they agree or not. A good method is to present a principal suggestion, and alternative options. (Wilcox, 2010) The team then examines the initial proposal should ask whether there are other alternatives, are there any problems or errors in the original proposal? Can be further improved?
Answering the above questions we can proceed to the next step which is how to implement the proposal. The groupthink is a result of bad processes, isolation and a desire preserving at all costs of group cohesion. All these factors however, can be addressed positively so that collective decisions can be improved and have only positive effect on business and its
