Born on September 13, 1969 in New Orleans, Louisiana, Tyler’s childhood is marked by poverty, suffered years of abuse by the hands of his father and being sexually abused outside the home. At one point, he attempted to commit suicide to escape from his hard-hitting situation. He dropped out of high school but later eventually earned a GED. Before discovering his true passion, he held many unrewarding trades and even lived out of his car for a time. He found an outlet by writing about his life that inspired from watching one of Oprah Winfrey’s shows. In 1992, Tyler moved to Atlanta to full fill his dream by hosting his own play but failed numerous times. Determined, he continued to pursue his dream of hosting a show and in 1998, it finally took flight where hundreds of African-Americans lined up to watch his show he devoted his life to, I know I’ve been changed. Tyler’s work began with a play he scribbled in a notebook, fueled by angry and resentment; he has grown it into a powerful bond with so many people. Perry has made it a point to control and own his brand. He considered launching his own TV network before he signed an exclusive production deal with Oprah’s OWN network in 2013. As head of Tyler Perry productions, he expanded the studio in 330 acres. The Dream Building which symbolizes “commitment to empowerment,” in hopes that it serves as a model and giving a major boost to cultural diversity. This will provide employment by creating 3,000 to 4,000 new jobs and recruiting people from the poorer communities around Atlanta. This is his way of giving back. This “beyond you” leadership style evident on his movie sets has a positive difference that has a sense of camaraderie. The environment of feeling valued and being treated with respect
