It was designed to broaden the understanding of the experience of woman suffering from depression who undertook participation in a yoga intervention as a treatment modality. The study involved twelve women with a known diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). These women took part in an eight week gentle yoga intervention where data was collected through semi- structured daily interviews that lasted around twenty to forty minutes. The women were recruited through the University of Virginias institutional review board (IBR), approved recruitment materials, word of mouth or referrals made by mental health providers. The results showed that the women used their own experience of depression to describe their personal experience of yoga. Through their documentation, two major themes were identified. The first was that the experience of depression as described by these women, involves stress, persisting negative thoughts (rumination) and the feeling of isolation. The second showed that they found yoga to be a beneficial modality in assisting to overcome these key components of depression. One of them being the fact that it was not a randomized controlled group,they could not further there investigation and acquire further statistics comparing those who participated in the iRest yoga nidra program to those who may be using other means of coping, such as stress management, traditional mental health services or medication. The research also took place during several semesters making it hard to retain the same participants through out the trial. In future studies it would be beneficial if student received academic credit so that it might reduce the risk of this happening. Results show that even though there was a lack of resources for this trial the students still showed substantial improvements. Not only was there a significant decrease in stress levels, depression and worry, participants also reported a higher level of observation and mindfulness.
