The first weakness of Willies’ is occasional overemphasis on particular employees. This action is detrimental to the transformational leadership theory because “without balancing the needs of the group with the preferences of individuals, however, you could overemphasize the needs or contribution of a single member” (Duggan, 2017). An example of how Willie demonstrates this is occasionally he would call on his two “favorite team members” for special choice assignments. This often irked other members of his team because it made them feel not as important and valuable. One time, one of the team members got involved in a conversation with one of the leaders’ “favorites” that turned out ugly. This action is detrimental to the transformational leadership theory because the team and employees view this behavior as being “not concerned about everything going on”. Willie is such a visionary looking through a macro-operational lens that often some of the micro-operational things are overlooked. With a four hundred person department to lead, he often doesn’t have the time to put out every little fire. There was a time when one of the ramp agents had an issue with one of the passenger bags. The handle broke off and the agent was attempting to reattach it to the bag. Willie happened to be walking by and the agent asked him to help but he was late for a meeting. The agent didn’t get the help he felt he needed and he was upset that “Willie didn’t care about that problem”. Enacting this recommendation would lead to the team’s and departments ability to set expectations of seeing the macro and the micro processes. Willie often loses focus of the small things going on in the department because of size and complexity of the department. Nicholls states “leadership as "influence on individuals" without using power or authority” (1988). This influence the lead possesses can be viewed as negative when an employee’s concern is not properly heard and understood. By Willie improving on this recommendation, the team will see that even the small details of the operation are important and need consideration to be rectified should a problem
