What is happening in this photograph is a Chinese student is protesting the militarization of China in Beijing by placing his life at risk by standing in front of four oncoming military tanks I could, in all reality, run him over at any moment. In Beijing in 1989, many students were upset with China and they felt that they needed to protest against the government. Time Magazine claims that this picture has a lot of effect on what people think actually happened that day in Tiananmen Square because of the fact that the Chinese government blocks out most of the information of what happened that day. “More than a quarter century after the massacre, the Chinese government’s extensive censorship apparatus — which employs two million online censors — still rigorously blocks information about the protest” (Rayman). China did not want the word getting out that they were harming their students to the point where they could not get a solid education. However, this picture provides more formation then the Chinese government provided in the past 25 years. This picture shows that Chinese students are willing to put their lives in danger in order get hey well-rounded education. I feel that people can empathize with the student in this picture because it can closely relate to what they have gone through in the past. But whenever someone empathizes with a photograph, there is always that person or group that wants to make a quick buck off it and exploit it.
