Through the Gates of Splendor This book is a wonderful truth, written by Elisabeth Elliot, about the bibliography of five young men being called to the mission field. All five of these men come from diverse upbringings and go to different regions of Ecuador, to work with different tribes. But all five of these men have something in common, they all stand for Christ and want to spread His Word. These men are willing to do anything for Christ, even die, as long as they get the name of Jesus Christ out into the lives of the unsaved. These five men are obviously very different, but Jim Elliot, Elisabeth’s husband, went into the mission field at the age of twenty-five. He was a “young, broad-chested, thick brown haired, and blue-gray eyed man” (Page 14). Jim went to grammar school, but always wanted to sail when he was there. After he graduated from school, God weighed heavy on his heart, that he should become a missionary in Ecuador. Many people questioned how he could get such a wonderful education and then turn around and go in the middle of the jungle in Ecuador for primitive people. Both of them felt that God was calling them to be missionaries. Pete was preparing to be a Bible professor, he and Jim had gone to the same college together. He was, “shorter than Jim, with a high forehead and dark wavy hair,” (page 14). Pete Flemming had proposed to Olive in a letter and then not to long afterwards they married, in 1945. These men went to evangelize to the Aucas, and other tribes; such as the Quichuas. Both Pete and Jim learned that descendants of the Aucas murdered a Jesuit priest. Obviously at a Biblical stand point this was immoral; however they aren’t being aware of the Christian perspective, they were unaware how wicked it actually
