Not mainstream ideas
One of the biggest challenges third parties face in the electoral process is the radical ideas that many of them profess to support. While perhaps some of their ideas are generic enough that people can get behind them, their overall platforms are frightening to most mainstream voters. In total, the votes cast during these elections amounted to significantly less than 800,000 in total. Interestingly enough, the Constitution Party supports the current "Tea Party" candidates.
What is wrong with the Tea Party?
For most voters, it is an unbelievable notion that someone who was opposed to government would actually run for government office. And yet, Tea Party candidates have done just that. In fact, those who have gone on to win their elections have done little more than to create even more polarization than we ever thought possible in Washington.
Democrats and Republicans are NOT alike
Those who believe that the two-party system is unfair unfortunately do not seem to be able to do very much about it. These people are the same ones that scream that Democrats and Republicans are identical and there was really no difference in their policies. However, the differences between the two parties are often very stark if anyone will bother to take 20 minutes to do their
