During the interview process, parents consistently described the positive experiences they had during the times they directly worked with the district. Consequently, those same parents admitted that they had not been very involved in their children’s education process, especially after the children entered high school. The administrator and teacher interviews provided supporting responses that were indicative of minimal parental involvement and that there was a visible lack of knowledge and understanding among parents as to how they should be involved. All interview groups, including the administrator, teacher, and parents unanimously responded that frequent, ongoing communication is imperative to ensure students’ academic success in the Oilton Schools.
Administrators and teachers adamantly responded that parents need to be actively involved and follow up with staff regarding their children’s educational progress. Mr. EM, a high school teacher, stated, “Parents should be involved and informed about their students and what they are being taught. I think they should be encouraged to assist their child with information their kids are receiving and getting to know the teachers during the educational process.” Mr. DM, the high school principal, stated, “I would like to see parents more active, in contact with teachers, be involved with students’ academic work at home, and frequently communicating with teachers, counselors, and administrators in the district.” Middle school…
