There are many community resources I will access to assist me in addressing the parental and community concerns of Success Middle School. As a school building leader, it is essential that I am aware of how to “mobilize community resources…to show my appreciation and use for diverse cultural, social and intellectual resources” (ELCC 4.2). Resources from the local community will be utilized to help support the school in organizing events that welcome parents into the school to collaborate with their children and the school community. “Communities are valuable resources of knowledge and rich learning environments that teachers can tap to make learning more relevant and meaningful” (Glickman, 2013). A way to develop such a sentiment at Success Middle School is to create service learning opportunities. By integrating the curriculum with community service, students expand their knowledge outside the classroom and parents can take part in service learning projects. This will not only socially impact the school community by bringing about collaboration, but will also stimulate the intellectual growth of students. According to Arrington and Moore (2001), “when we purposefully involve students in the learning experiences that stretch far beyond the school walls into the community and world, we provide motivation and relevance” (Glickman, 2013). Having parents get involved with the service learning projects will also connect them to the school community. Parents bring their cultural backgrounds into the equation, which would bring a newfound diversity into the service learning projects. Additionally, we will host a Career Day and parents and local community members will be invited to share their professional expertise. This will bring intellectual resources into the school and help the school develop into an inclusive and positive environment.
