Reflection for Week Eleven
During week eleven I had the opportunity to sit in on parent teacher conferences on Tuesday and Thursday. Although the days were very long since we were at school until 6:30pm each night, I gain knew insight from the teacher’s perspective. I learned that it is best to sit beside the parents instead of sitting in the “teacher’s chair” so that parents do not feel intimidated as you share information about their students. You want to make the parents feel comfortable as they listening to the teacher give an overview of their students’ progress, strengths, weaknesses, and goals. You also want the parents to feel comfortable sharing information that could help their student in the classroom during the meeting regardless

Although I have not been contacted by anyone from the school, I have been told they were interested in having me fill a long term sub position after graduation. Staff from BSIS have been in contact with the Mrs. Blanton, the assistant principal, and Mrs. Scruggs, but I have not been contacted other than the observation. On Wednesday morning the reading coach observed me teach math and reading for almost two hours. This was one of the most unusual mornings of the entire school year. During this two-hour time period the class phone rang three or four times, there were five or six interruptions from people knocking on the door to pull students out for intervention or to climb the rock wall because they sold enough items during the fundraiser. Not only did all of the interruptions occur, but I had the math tutor in my classroom pulling students to work with and a new push in began that morning. This push in is much larger than the group that comes in during the Science/Social Studies time. I am certain that my classroom was filled to capacity during the short time frame I was observed. Even with all of this happening in the classroom my students behaved perfectly since they have been taught how to respond when there are interruptions during our lessons. The students were on task and participated like they always do. Since neither Mrs. Scruggs or myself received any

For this week’s reflection I chose to discuss number one. After reviewing the question, I realized that there have been times where I did not feel “connected” during a conversation. It may have been because I was bored with the topic and tended to start thinking of something else while the conversation was still going, not even knowing I was doing so. Or other times I may have not known the full concept or understood completely what was being discussed in the conversation. I think everyone has the tendency to feel disconnected from a conversation, whether they did not comprehend what was being said or if they did not have any interest in the topic.…

After meeting with the principal, we discussed our data and brainstormed somethings we thought could be contributing factors to our low mClass scores in Kindergarten. A common trend we found when looking at individual student data reports, classroom data on the students, and discipline data was that students were having trouble communicating orally, being able to express their thoughts, and an increase in behavior when faced with situations that caused for emotional response. From conversation, data, and identifying trends, the following SIT Goal was created: By the end of the 2018 school year, student’s reading scores will increase 10% in Kindergarten through 2nd grade by addressing students’ social emotional needs as measured through on-going…

This semester for class instead of reading I chose to work at Beaver Falls elementary school service learning program called Dare2XL. The objective of this program is to help students finish their school work, help them understand their homework and what they are doing in class, all while encouraging the students. Going into the program not knowing what to expect or how to help them, or what I was helping them with, made me nervous and scared. The first day was a little stressful but as we were paired up with one student I was relieved and it wasn’t bad at all. I was paired up with DJ a fourth grader, we worked on his math homework and did extra problems that he was going to learn the next day.…

I hoped I would learn how to reach the unreachable parent. Text, email, letters and phone calls that are praising their child have been ineffective in creating two-way communication. I know the parents that are intimidated by the school can be reached with these methods as well as parents that have little education. Students are taking responsibility for their actions, and more engaged at school. I have helped them to better cope with their unstable lives, and see beyond it and want to change their future.…
