Our personalities start to develop after we are born, and they are influenced by heredity and environmental factors, along with personal experiences and lifestyles. Having an understanding for how personalities develop can be very beneficial to patient care. In the clinical setting there will always be day-to-day interactions with co-workers and patients who will obviously display a variety of different personalities from each other. In the medical profession, one must be able to set aside any personal bias, beliefs, feelings and thoughts, which could potentially create a barrier to such relationships. If the medical assistant can gain an understanding for each person based on their own individual personality, this can help create a valuable, beneficial relationship between patients and the care team.

Understanding the components involved with the personalities of others can help create better communication between co-workers and patients, because relationships can be built based on mutual respect, trust and understanding. When different personalities clash, this can create tension and an ultimately an unpleasant working environment for everyone in the office, including the patients. So, it is always important to remember that each individual is unique; therefore each person will have different expectations, preferences, and boundaries. What may be acceptable behavior to some could be interpreted as offensive to another. When the medical professional gains a level of understanding for each unique personality, the office can run smoothly as a team and provide excellent care and great communication with one
