Many people support the death penalty while others oppose it. Throughout history there have been many controversies on the topic of capital punishment. There are many arguments that oppose the use of capital punishment. There is also debate over whether the death penalty fulfills the philosophies of punishment. Death penalty is one of the most controversial topics out there because of how many people oppose of it and how many people support it. Those who oppose capital punishment find it to be immoral for someone’s life to be taken away because of how its handles. And those to support death penalty find it right for the law to take action on criminals who committed murder or other serious crimes. Although many people approve the death penalty, there are negative consequences, which outweigh the positive effects of executing inmates. There are four philosophies of modern sentencing that full and not fulfill the philosophies of punishment such as deterrence, retribution, incapacitation and rehabilitation.
One philosophy of modern sentencing is deterrence. This philosophy states to that the use of punishment on a criminal would act as an example to deter others from committing the same crimes (Schmalleger, 2013). In other words, these criminals are being used to create fear in society and prevent future crimes. When it comes to deterrence, the death penalty does not fulfill the philosophies of punishment.
