Capital punishment, or the death penalty, remains one of the most controversial topics in the United States of America. Two parties are usually at odds with this issue. People who believe that the death penalty is moral and people who think it is immoral. The government and prisons are the biggest advocates for keeping the death penalty. The National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty are an organization whose main goal, just like their name says, to completely remove the death penalty from state laws. They are an organization that has helped many states in the last ten years rewrite their state laws and remove the death penalty. Their whole purpose is not just to abolish the death penalty, but advocate for the care of all victims of crime

From the state’s secret lethal injections to the amount of innocent people put on death row and the people who were executed but then later on discovered to be innocent. Not many people usually think anything about people in prison and how they are being treated because they may think that because people in prison are in prison because they committed a crime and thus should be punished. This issue does not just start and end with the death penalty. The death penalty is just one problem with the justice system today. After the death penalty, people will realize the way prisoners are being treated in general and just because someone commits a crime that lands them in jail does not mean that they lose their constitutional rights. Nutraloaf was a form of punishment given to prisoners. Nutraloaf is just a tasteless mass of different kinds of mashed together foods and given to prisoners as a meal. According to Eliza Barclay’s 2014 article Food as Punishment: Giving US Inmates ‘The Loaf’ Persists, 12 states gave this Nutraloaf to their inmates in state-run institutions. Giving inmates tasteless, and many consider nasty, food can be called cruel and unusual punishment which is illegal in the entire country of the United States. Considering the fact that food is a basic human need, many see the use of Nutraloaf in prisons as unethical. This type of mistreatment of prisoners/human beings is completely unethical.
