Human Rights: Why Abolish the Death Penalty?). It is a common belief that the death penalty is a sufficient punishment for people who commit hostile and death-provoking crimes. Yet, what justice is served by the taking of another human life? “Capital punishment serves as a deterrent, preventing would-be killers from committing crimes.” (Smith 13). If this was an effective motive for murderers and tyrants, why are there still benevolent crimes being committed to this day? Just because someone gets accused for a crime does not mean that others won’t attempt to slip through the justice system. “their execution prevents citizens from future murder.” (Smith 13). There’s a possibility that a person is falsely accused for murder and taken into custody while the real culprit is still on the loose. The death penalty, simply put, is far too risky and there’s always room for error in the system. The risk of killing a falsely accused convict and the painlessness of lethal injection should aid in the removal of the death penalty from the list of possible punishments. Since lethal injection is formulated to be virtually painless and hundreds of people have been exonerated nationwide for a crime, does the death penalty serve any justice? “Setting an example is not the main means of influencing others, it is the only means.” -Albert
