How does a deep fried charcoal beef patty drenched in oil, salt covered greasy potato chips, and a large cup of carbonated bubbly sensation sound to you? Probably the same way it sounds to every other American that smothers themselves in the delicious drive thru menus for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Sounds easy and appetizing? Maybe. But the Big Mac you ordered with French fries on the side is no meal; it is a heart attack waiting to happen. Millions of Americans have fallen to the savory, irresistible burgers and yet, they forget to contemplate on what makes them so enthralling. Fast food companies use harmful additives like monosodium glutamate (MSG) to their will in order to provide for the “mouthwatering” taste. The increase in fast consumption over the last couple of decades has caused obesity rates to increase uncontrollably within populations. Modern society has fallen under the impression that any food approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) signifies a healthy diet. Therefore, people blindly devour anything in front of their plate and fail to question the FDA’s judgment. Like the Gilded Age where economic prosperity masked political corruptness, people are misled into believing that fast foods cannot cause any potential harm to its consumers. Most fast foods contain additives and preservatives like MSG which “induces obesity and diabetes in rats accompanied with steatosis and steatohepatitis, resembling human nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis” (Wang et al.).
