America’s obsession with food, the expanding waistlines of individuals serve as a testament to the previous statement. Throughout America cities and towns, there are literally thousands of fast food restaurants; such as McDonald’s, Burger King and Wendy’s. It is a fair statement to say that America’s relationship with food is a love-hate relationship. On one hand, Americans like to indulge in their food; this explains why the food industry in America is such a thriving business. On the other hand, Americans are struggling with serious health problems such as obesity, hypertension and high blood sugar. Many of these diseases are directly related and proportional to the unhealthy eating habits that Americans regularly engage in.

The film demonstrates the level of difficulty that is involved in the effort to regulate one’s appetite and metabolic rate. Individuals, who are obese, sometimes have a hard time controlling their eating patterns without professional or familial intervention. The film demonstrates that adjusting to a proper eating habit can be as difficult as trying to quit smoking or quit taking drugs. In fact, Sick and Nearly Dead show what can happen to many people in America, if their unhealthy eating habits continue unchecked. What the film clearly shows is that America’s unhealthy eating habits is a problem that is reversible; in the film, John Cross was able to achieve results because of his willingness to adjust his lifestyle.
