While in the LP office I viewed the store's video surveillance, before any questioning took place. I confirmed LP's statement that the subject stole from the store. The subject is shown entering the store through the garden center empty handed. The subject is next observed selecting several items in different areas of the store before proceeding to customer service. The subject attempted to return the items unsuccessfully.…
On April 1 2008 i was charged with petiit larceny. The incident happened at Whitehall Jr/Sr highschool where i was a senior at the time. The previous day two of my friends and I had taken the bells that rang to change classes of the wall as a senior and April fools day prank. We had hidden the bells in the music room for the night so we could put them back the next day. On April 1 2008 when I attended school that day the principal had discovered the bells were missing a revuiewed the school security tape.…
Routine Activity: Theft at the Supermarket Anyone is capable of committing a crime because as long as there is a temptation, there is a potential for crime. According to the Routine Activity Theory, three elements are needed in order for a crime to take place: a target, a potential offender and the absence of guardians. Apart from that, this theory proposes that by changing the environment, crime can be reduced. Five techniques available to prevent crime are increasing the effort, increasing the risks, reducing the rewards, reducing provocation, and removing excuses. The target is the at the supermarket where I work at.…
This week’s readings introduced many aspects of crime that touch closer to home. Many students may be reading this same textbook, though I expect that we relate to these topics differently, some grasp our attention more and others, standing to be more significant to our lives and fears. This week we were introduced to the economic repercussions of crimes along with the fear of knowing that some serial murders are so cunning that they simply seem to disappear. The reason many types of physical crimes are more feared for some individuals is the simple fact that it takes work to earn the things they chose to purchase.…
Property crime is the next category of general crime that includes among other crimes burglary (into shop, house or flat, also called breaking and entering and sometimes housebreaking), theft, larceny, shoplifting, pickpocketing, fraud, forgery, embezzlement, receiving stolen property, motor vehicle theft and unauthorized use of a vehicle. The term theft is sometimes used synonymously with larceny. Theft, however, is actually a broader term, encompassing many forms of deceitful taking of property, including swindling, embezzlement, and false pretences. Some states categorize all these offenses under a single statutory crime of theft.…
In “Offenders” from “Bicycle Theft”, Shane D. Johnson, Aiden Sidebottom, and Adam Thorpe interpret their findings into the reasons why people steal bikes: to joyride, to trade for cash, or to fill a request. The authors acknowledge their data and suggest that, overall, the types of bicycle thieves varies upon where you are and the offenders age. The data also depends upon the victim’s reactions which can lead to a “crime multiplier” if they commit the same crime to compensate for their…
(p.3-4)” In previous studies on armed robberies, researchers would interview people in jail who had been arrested for committing robberies. The authors of this study took a different approach and interviewed 86 active robbers. Active robbers were defined as committing an offense in the past month. The study included both men and women, blacks and whites, and individuals…
There are large numbers of hypothesis and explanations to why violent crime in Australia, the United States and Great Britain generally decreased for a period in the late 1990s. Levitt (2004) states that the two most convincing reasons for the drop in crime are improved security and rising prison populations. Farrell et al. (2011) argues that higher levels in security was an important factor of the crime drop, because it reduced crime opportunities, this affected different types of crime such as vehicle theft. In earlier years the two main features to prevent vehicle theft was keys and license plates (Farrell, 2013).…
In urban communities there is still a fear of crime, although there are statistical data indicating that in the past twenty years crimes rates have decreased by 42.5 percent (Deller, 2009, p. 121). Ms. Jacobus has had her vehicle stolen and vandalized and has been a…
Examples are thefts of bicycles, motor vehicle parts and accessories, shoplifting, pocket-picking, or the stealing of any property or article that is not taken by force and violence or by fraud. Attempted larcenies are included. Embezzlement, confidence games, forgery, check fraud, etc., are excluded” (2014). While doing this research and analyzing the crimes, the first theory that can to my mind was the routine activist theory. Routine activities theory stresses that criminal behavior takes place with the three variables that reflect our everyday routines.…
“The Crime Problem” has always been a topic of interest among Americans. For whatever reason, the bloodier the crime, the higher the interest and the more people there are looking for information. According to much research collected over the past three decades, “particularly heinous crimes have tremendous appeal for the media” (Dowler, et al. 842). In order to receive the most updated crime news, Americans turn to the media; newspapers, magazines, news stations, and social media. While the media is a strong resource to obtain information, it is not without its flaws.…
Neorealism is a movement especially in Italian filmmaking characterized by the simple direct depiction of lower-class life. De Sica's finest achievement is bringing the previously ignored working classes to the screen. His primary aim in the Bicycle Thieves was to use the camera to show how people lived. The non-professional actors give fine performances and lend the film a documentary-like air, even though the narrative itself is fictional.…
to outline how criminal behavior is more likely in certain contexts. The existence of a possible, accessible victim, a motivated offender, and a lack of competent guardianship combine to create an opportunity structure (Haggerty 2009). They argue that crime and violence are sociogenic; poverty, unemployment, societally blocked means to legitimate ends may all contribute to someone’s entrance into crime (Holmes and Holmes 1998). Perhaps the situations that allow for sociopathy (e.g. socialization into violence in interpersonal relations) to arise contribute to an individual’s entrance into crime (Holmes and Holmes 1998). With regard to serial killing, sociologists explore contextual explanations.…
crime rate has dropped. Since the 1990s, homicide, burglary and theft have all dropped; violent crime has dropped 40%, and motor vehicle theft by 60% (Farrell, Tseloni, Mailley, & Tilly 2011). Now, the growth in incarceration can be attributed to “increases in decisions to incarcerate and increases in time served, rather than increases in offenses or arrests.” (Schoenfeld 2012, p. 323) This shows that mass incarceration has not contributed to reducing crime; in fact it may have more negative effects than positive ones.…
Compared with commercial or other types of robberies, street robberies tend to be more opportunistic and occur in a more open and less predictable environment. Though some often consider street robbery a crime of opportunity involving little to no planning, street robbers do engage in decision making processes (Monk, Heinonen, & Eck, 2010, p. 10). The vast majority of those who commit street robberies are male. The primary motivation for street robbers is money. In the article, Stick-Up, Street Culture, and Offender Motivation, Jacobs and Wright (1999) interviewed several offenders about the robberies they committed, eighty of 81 offenders stated money was their motivation (p. 153).…
