I write to apply for the position of Assistant Professor of Nonfiction. Having earned two B.A.s in Natural History and Humanities and English/Philosophy (double major) from Texas Tech and my M.F.A in Nonfiction from the University of Iowa, I am currently finishing my dissertation under the direction of Jill Talbot at the University of North Texas. I am ABD, will defend March 13, 2017, and expect to graduate with a Ph.D. in English with a concentration in Creative Writing (Nonfiction) in May 2017.

My publishing credits include a book of literary nonfiction under contract at the University of Georgia Press, three literary contest awards from Shenandoah, North American Review, and Columbia: A Journal of Literature and Art, four awards from the Society for Professional Journalists, and the prestigious, two-year Iowa Arts Fellowship from the University of Iowa. My writing has also been accepted by Orion, Hotel Amerika, The Rumpus, Fourth Genre, and twenty other national literary journals in total.

My book, Pandora’s Garden: Kudzu, Cockroaches, and Other Misfits of Ecology, profiles nineteen invasive or unwanted species. Part traditional essay, part nature writing, part narrative nonfiction, the book’s chapters blend like the biospheres of the globe; each chapter succeeds to the next, woven together in theme like ecotones. The book is, on one level, about creatures that humans don’t get along with, but the chapters take on a range of other subjects, including stolen children…
