The Popularity of Football

Football is a sport that has been a part of the lives of many Americans for as long as they can remember. It is a game that has molded generations of us for many years. Young boys always dreamt of being the Quarterback for their school team, and young girls would wait for the day that cheerleading try outs would be held because to cheer at a football game would be quite an achievement.

American football has a history that is quite unique, from being a blend of sports, to having such a burst of popularity, it is easy to see why it is a sport with so many rules and fans. The sports of soccer and rugby’s early beginnings are believed by some to be partially diverted from the ancient Greek game of harpaston. Harpaston was often described as a “very rough and brutal game”,which if we have ever seen a rugby match we can recognize the similarities there. The roots of American football started in 1869, when teams from Rutgers and Princeton Universities met for the first ever college soccer football game. During a seven year time span after that game soccer was being played less and rugby was becoming the sport of choice by many.
