My law is the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, public law number 107-110. In the Senate, the committee assigned was Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions committee and convened on March 28, 2001. In the House of Representatives, the committee assigned was Education and Workforce and convened on December 13, 2001. The purpose of this bill is to ensure that all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high quality education, and reach at a minimum proficiency, on challenging state academic achievement standards and state academic assessments.
Disadvantaged students need to meet high academic standards as a result of this bill. To achieve this purpose the committee wants to take action to ensure academic assessments, teacher training, and instructional materials are aligned with state academic standards. They want to make a difference mostly in the nation’s highest poverty schools, targeting limited English speakers, migratory children, children with disabilities, Indian children, neglected children, and young children in need of reading assistance. This bill will hold schools, local educational agencies (LEA’s), and states more accountable for improving academic achievement, along with placing penalties when they don’t meet goals set in the state plan.
