The first step, after creating the team, in coordinating systems is to identify the goals and scope of each separate entity. The external environment includes those interested parties and competitors who are outside of the healthcare organization, such as vendors, clients, payers, and the community. When scanning these environments, it is important to look into published literature, information from vendors and organization (HIMSS), and accreditation requirements. Some data that should be collected is the cost of vendors, state regulations, and policies that could benefit (or hurt) the overall structure. On the other hand, the internal environment includes employees, physicians, and members of the board of trustees.
