Communication, being an essential part of organisational leadership affects the members of the organisations and thus in turn the performance of the organisation as a whole. Novick, Morrow and Mays (2008) substantiated this by stating that, the most important skills required by a leader in the 21st century are communication skills. Roebuck (2012) mentioned that leading change and encouraging a vision for internal communication and interacting with external stakeholders for eminent position and the reputation of the organisation, the leaders should focus on communication. In addition Bratton, Grint and Nelson (2004) mentioned, communication is very important in leadership, making reference to ‘Communication’ as being one of the five Cs of leadership with the other Cs being ‘Clarity’, ‘Conviction’, ‘Charisma’ and ‘Care’. Leaders need communication skills as it is crucial for their followers to focus on the organisation’s mission, vision and objectives (Winston & Patterson, 2006).
