Community Work Goals

I’ve always wanted a career in a field where I would be able to do the greatest good in the community; however, it wasn’t until my last year of community college that I realized Sociology/Human Service was the best choice. When I initially started school, I was interested in Computer Programming, but eventually learned this wasn’t the direction I wanted to move forward with. I’ve always loved helping people, and although working as a computer tech would afford me this opportunity, on some level, human service work is what I was called to do. I value the importance of being a helping hand, which is why I will continuously aspire to be the best community worker that I can be. It wasn’t an easy decision going back to school as a nontraditional student, but my dedication to a bigger cause would not allow me to give up on my dreams. My commitment to my education brought an uneasiness and sense of imbalance to my life at one point, but in order to be successful I learned effective time management, delegation and how to maximize my resources in such a way as to promote a structured environment that created balance in my professional and personal life. I pride myself on achieving many landmark events in my life. My own diligence and tenacity steered me to believe that no goal is too big or too small and all are attainable if I simply try. As a mother of two I didn’t know how I would juggle such a heavy work load. I found myself struggling to maintain this extensive new change, but I was determined to make it work, so I prioritized my time by creating deadlines ahead of time. I created a schedule that would allow me to have one day out the week for rest. I used my rest days to debrief, and maximize my time with my children. Attending school and being a full-time mother became a part of my everyday life. Making the decision to continue my education and obtain my undergraduate degree was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, it allowed me to see past my challenges and showcase my dedication to becoming a human service worker. My ability to seek potential in negative situations has built up a great deal of resiliency in me. The sociology program taught me how to identify my strengths and challenges. I can manage challenging situations and turn them into opportunities. The challenges that I have overcame is one of the reasons I’m motivated to help others do the same. I know that being an Outreach and Enrollment Coordinator may be very challenging but also rewarding. It will require a great deal of determination, but I know I can do it because I’m dedicated to building strategic relationship in the communities we serve while helping to educating the general public on health insurance options available to them.
