Personal Narrative: My Goal Of Becoming A Pharmacist

Decent Essays
On April, 19 2013 I was blessed with a baby boy. It was the happiest day of my life, but I was unaware of the hurdles that lie ahead. My world changed completely, I lost my nights rest and had to readjust my schedule to meet the needs of my baby. I didn’t have any family support and ended up juggling school, work, motherhood and household responsibilities. I reached a point in my life where I had decided to drop out of school because I could no longer cope with the stress. After a semester, I felt that I failed in achieving my goal of becoming a Pharmacist. I thought about what I would tell my child when he grew up. After a lot of reflecting, I decided to start taking classes again, but this time I focused on effective ways to manage my time.

Anyone who was brave enough to ask got my vehement no when asked if I thought that the college, subsequent medical school, and training would be too much school or that I would get bored. I decided very early that to be a doctor was one of the most exciting things that a person could chose to be and my fantastic pediatrician was the initial spark for this love of medicine. The care that I could see him exhibit in his daily operations as well as the ease at which he interacted with patients and parents alike inspired me. His knowledge was fascinating and I longed to have that level of understanding of the human body.…

Moments that affected me, such as being turned down for a job position to more involved moments, like when all of my high school friends graduated from college, but the pivotal moment when I decided to return to school to make earning my degree a reality, was when I gave birth to my daughter. One of my biggest faults is that I tend to procrastinate and, although my decision for physician assistant was made quickly, taking the initial steps were difficult. In the beginning, I always thought, “I’ll shadow next summer” or “I have so much time to get everything done” and I just kept putting it off. When I realized that I would have to put in many hours of hard work, I made it my priority to complete not only what was required but as much as I could to prepare myself for this profession. I worked hard to meet the requirements of my desired programs as well as the accomplish the goals I set for myself and this hard work has made me ever more resolute in my decision. For years I wondered why there was so much patient contact and shadowing required for this position and-…
