1.0 INTRODUCTION

1. Background of the Study:

The research investigates the impacts of social networking websites on undergraduate students’ performance at Technology College Sarawak. The variables identified are age, gender, education, social influence and academic performance. Questionnaire will be design based on the requirement to determine the reasons and factors that affect the students’ performance and will be distributed to 30 correspondents, which consist of students in Technology College Sarawak.

The first online social networking site created was Geocities, in 1994. followed by, TheGlobe.com, AOL instant messenger, SixDegrees.com,Classmates,Frindzy, Hi-5 and then, the new millennium modern social networking such as Friendster, MySpace, LinkedIn, and the most popular social networking sites ever created, Facebook and Twitter.

The addiction of the online social networking services or applications grows alarmingly in the age scale of 18-29 (Pew Research Centre, 2013). Most of the population come from teens and young adult. Moreover, with the new technology of the mobile phone nowadays which makes the access to this service or application easy without opening the PC or laptop, the use of this media service are getting higher. The users spend nearly half of their day engaged in the social networking applications.

This online social networking can jeopardise one’s life, studies, for example commitment in working, personality and whole life. Students who are addicted to the trend tend to lost interest in studies as they are excessively preoccupied with the applications in their phones. For instance, they cannot focus on what they are being taught in the class and did not participating well in the process of learning.
