Technology’s Effect on Child Development:
Inside and Outside of the Classroom
The use of technology is ever growing in the world we live in today. Jobs are increasingly using technology, as well as education system. Technology is being integrated into classrooms and this is changing the way children are learning and developing. Technology is developing a strong effect on children, both inside and outside of the classroom.
Background
Technology has been making its way into classrooms for last five to 10 years. Within education, technology is being used through standardized tests, digital lessons, and communication between teachers, students and parents. Digital materials are being introduced through digital lesson. These lessons could be anything from English, math, or science to business or fine arts. Some schools may hand out iPads and “many schools use a mix of digital resources touting potential benefits such as greater ability to personalize, higher engagement amount students, enhanced ability to keep content updated and current and greater inactivity and adaptively” (Harold, 2016). The purpose of these digital resources is to better education for each individual student. Many school are trying to look at the positives of using technology in the classrooms more so than any of the negatives. Lessons taught through digital resources can be tailored to match different learning styles as well as using a style referred to as blended learning which “combines traditional teacher-to-student lessons with technology based instructions” (Harold, 2016). Blended learning is a way to start integrating technology into classrooms. Teachers can learn as they go and combine technology with their lesson plans. Another positive with blended learning, is it provides the use of technology while still have the face-to-face communication. Teachers need to learn how to keep the balance of online learning and socializing among the classroom for students to continue to develop social skills. Children are exposed to technology at a very young age, from playing on their parent’s phones to television or video games. There are also programs that are more technologically based that are offered for children to go to. An example of these would be “digitally mediated informal and nonformal learning environments have been sites for research focusing on youth and leadership skills, children as producers rather than costumers, creative production skills with digital media, development of identity, and of social identities and communities” (Shively, 2014). These learning environments help students utilize technology and learn how to use technology for the benefit of knowledge, even if they don’t realize it themselves. Different games or programs help students develop connections in their brain that they may not have had before. Technology could help with problems solving and learning cause and effect – if you hit this button, this happens. Learning through technology could develop more self-sufficient learners. In one study “children engaged in the use of a new digital media platform (learn by doing), worked by creating digital artifacts and enjoyed the process through their play when testing their artifacts mechanics, to check to see if their artifacts worked or not” (Shively, 2014).
