The immune system is what protects the body from any potentially harmful substances by recognizing and responding to antigens. Antigens are typically protein substances are on the surface of cells, viruses, fungi, or bacteria. Though nonliving materials such as toxins and/or chemicals can also be antigens. Now the proteins that are antigens are seen by the immune system as normal and the body usually does not react against them. Innate, or the nonspecific immunity is the defense system that we are born with and it protects the body against all antigens. It mainly keeps harmful materials from entering the body and this line of protection becomes our first line defense. The second line of defense is referred to as the adaptive or specific immunity. This line of defense protects the body from re-occurring exposure to the same antigens (Immune Response, 2014).
Antibiotics are medicines used to treat infections or diseases caused by bacteria. They work by blocking vital processes in bacteria, killing or stopping them from multiplying. This aids in the body’s natural immune system making it stronger to fight the infection. Antibiotics differ in types, there are some that affect a wide range of bacteria and only a few that are deal with more specific types of bacteria. The antibiotics that deal with a wide range are called broad spectrum, these mainly affect the way bacterial cells work.
