In chapter 1 and 2, I learned many different terms. Terms I knew but didn’t actually know that, that it was actually the real term. I learned that the goal of health promotion is to increase the health levels of individuals, families, groups, and communities. I learned more about carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, vitamins, minerals, and water. Carbohydrates are you main source of fuel. They consist of simple carbohydrates, often called sugars, and complex, carbohydrates, which include starch and fiber. Proteins provide energy and they also help in the structure of bones, muscles, enzymes, hormones, blood, the immune system, and cell membranes. Lipids are the densest form of energy that is available in foods and as stored energy in our bodies. They function as a component of all cell structures, they have a role in production of hormones, and provide padding to protect the body organs. Vitamins are compounds that indirectly assist other nutrients through the complete process of digestion, absorption, metabolism, and excretion. There are thirteen vitamins that are needed to help each part of the body function. Minerals are for structural purposes in the body and are found in body fluids. Water is a major part of every tissue in the body. Just like blood, water also provides a means of transportation for nutrients to and from cells. I learned about many other things as well.
