The gender pay gap myth is something that is controversially talked about constantly. It is controversial because they are two sides to this, it isn’t a lopsided affair. It is a hotly debated issue by men and women, of both sides, on various high-profile means of media. The gender pay gap is simply not true. There is a perfectly good reason why women tend to earn less than men. The women make 80 pence to every pound men make will be looked at in-depth. The effects of childbirth and maternity leave will be discussed and also who between the two genders, on average, work in more lucrative careers. One of the ways this myth can be debunked is by looking at how the “women earn 80 pence for every £1 men make” is a figure completely made up on just the one variable. This figure is simply based on average income between genders. It does not take into account education, hours per week worked or even the type of jobs men and women work as. Women choose to work in jobs such as nurses, primary teachers and administrators. Men tend to work as software developers, construction workers and computer systems administrators. Each of the jobs listed is dominated by the respective gender. [1]If you look at how much these jobs pay out you can see the trend that the majority of jobs men works in do indeed pay more. The current UK childcare system allows parents thirty hours a week of free childcare for thirty-eight weeks. The problem with this is that the remainder of the year parents will have to pay. However, childcare is an expensive ordeal. It costs on average, £110.01 per week to put your child into childcare. This is over £400 a month, a fair whack of someone’s wage. When some women, some men too, take time off when they have a baby they miss many training opportunities. These training opportunities may result in more responsibility for your job which, in turn, means more money. And since the statement made by the opposing party is merely based on the average income by gender – nothing else – women are paid less due to things such as missed training opportunities, not gender discrimination. You will miss a chance to stay at the same level as your peers and so will probably get paid less as the more qualified and educated people will get paid more. Also, a lot of women have chosen to work as carers for their family. This too, will have an effect of average income, as the figures are based on just average pay. The whole idea that the gap in pay is from the result of gender discrimination is incredibly inaccurate and incorrect. In the UK, you are allowed to take 52 weeks of maternity leave .
